Volleyball in San Francisco FAQ
Your Questions, Answered
We’re all about being social at Volo! While we offer some competitive volleyball leagues, those are specifically labeled as such and everything else is all about being social.
Only Volo competitive volleyball leagues are reffed. All other Volo volleyball leagues are self-reffed and there is no line judge.
Most Volo SF leagues consist of 7 regular-season weeks followed by a playoff week. League formats may vary, so be sure to review the league details before registering. If a league has an odd number of teams, schedules may include bye weeks or doubleheaders to ensure every team receives the appropriate number of games. Because Volo does not own facilities, schedule adjustments may occasionally be required due to venue availability. This can sometimes result in bye weeks, doubleheaders, or adjusted start times. In the event of inclement weather, Volo will make every effort to reschedule missed games by extending the season or incorporating doubleheaders into future weeks.
Competitive Volo volleyball games are an hour long and beginner and intermediate Volo leagues are 45 minutes long.
For Volo volleyball leagues if a team wins the first two sets of the match then the score will be reported as 2-0. The third set is just for fun.
For intermediate and competitive Volo volleyball leagues you are allowed to jump serve. However, for Volo beginner leagues jump serving is not allowed.
No – Volo plays first to 25 points, no win by two.
Registering as a Volo prepaid team guarantees that only your invited players will be on your roster, no free agents or small groups will be added to your team. Prepaid teams also have the flexibility to add players after registration closes and before the season starts by contacting [email protected].
At Volo we try to accommodate all requested shirt colors for each team but depending on the quantity of each color, some teams may receive a different color to make sure everyone gets their requested size.
When you register for a Volo league, you'll see a designated game time frame. This is the window during which your game may be scheduled, not the amount of time you'll be playing. For example, if a league is listed as 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM and games are one hour long, your team may be scheduled for a 7:00 PM, 8:00 PM, or 9:00 PM start time. You will only play your scheduled game, not the entire three-hour window. Most Volo SF weekday leagues begin after 6:00 PM, while weekend leagues are typically scheduled during the morning or early afternoon.
In a Volo league the top 4 teams are guaranteed to make playoffs and will be single elimination style all in one night. For some leagues there is capacity to take more teams for playoffs rather than just the top 4.
When a Volo SF season begins, registration for the next season opens on our website. New leagues launch at Early Bird pricing, which is the lowest price available for registration. Volo will notify you through email and the Volo app about upcoming Early Bird deadlines and registration close dates, so be sure to keep an eye on your inbox and notifications. Once Early Bird pricing ends, leagues move to regular pricing until the last day for registration, when Last Chance pricing goes into effect for any remaining spots.
Volo SF offers a variety of skill levels, ranging from recreational to competitive. If you're returning to a sport after some time away, are new to organized sports, or simply want a more social experience, we recommend starting in a recreational league. While all Volo leagues include friendly competition, we strive to group teams with similar skill levels to create the best experience for everyone. If you're unsure which league is the best fit, contact [email protected] and our team will be happy to help.
Yes, substitute players can join during the regular season through Volo's drop-in system. Your team captain can open a drop-in spot through the Volo app. For the first 10 minutes, the registration link is private, allowing you to share it directly with a friend. After 10 minutes, the spot becomes publicly available on the Volo app and website for any eligible player to claim. Drop-in players are not permitted during playoffs
The easiest way to connect with your teammates is through the team chat feature in the Volo app. All communications within the app are subject to the Volo Player Code of Conduct. Respectful and inclusive communication is expected at all times, and rude, abusive, or threatening behavior will not be tolerated.
To help prevent forfeits, teams that do not have enough players to meet the league's minimum roster requirements should open drop-in spots through the Volo app. Opening a drop-in spot allows another Volo player to join your team as a substitute for that night's games only. If your team needs a female player to meet coed roster requirements, captains can create a women-only drop-in spot to ensure the team remains eligible to play. Reminder: Drop-in players are only permitted during the regular season and are not allowed during playoffs
