Pickleball in New York Metro Area FAQ

Your Questions, Answered

Depends on what style you’re playing ! Check your league details If you and your crew don’t have a full roster, we’ll merge you with another small group. FYI – merged teams generally have extra players to protect against forfeits. If you’d like to make sure you have a larger or smaller team, you can register as a prepaid team which allows you to determine the number of players on your team.

No, in the Volo NYC pickleball leagues you do not need to bring your own paddle. Volo NYC provides paddles.

Yes! Here at Volo NYC you'll see two types of pickleball. The first is traditional pickleball which is similar to normal pickleball rules. We also offer a party pickleball version that was created to be a more social atmosphere and allow more players to join in on the pickleball fun!

Not to worry! Our hosts will explain the rules during week one of the program and you'll be a pro in no time.

While all of Volo NYC’s leagues are social first and suitable for beginners, party pickleball is our most beginner-friendly league. It differs from traditional pickleball in these ways: Traditional has a minimum team size of 3 players (2 on the court), and party has a minimum of 5 (also 2 on the court). Traditional pickleball you can only score when you're serving, and you serve until the other team wins the side-out. Party pickleball does a 5-serve set before switching the serve to the other team, and you can score even if you're not serving (i.e., rally scoring). Party pickleball plays more games per match (5-7) than traditional (3-5), since it moves faster with the serving sets. It also allows for more subs to enter the game, hence the larger roster size. Volo NYC often hosts the traditional and party leagues at the same location (usually they fit several courts so Volo NYC have the space to run both styles at once, although the actual leagues are separate and you wouldn't play teams in the party league if you end up playing traditional, and vice versa).

Sign up solo, with a friend, or as a full team. A huge chunk of our NYC players come in as free agents, and we place them on teams with other solo signups. It's one of the most popular ways to meet people in the city, especially if you're new here.

When you sign up, a prompt will ask you if you have any teammate requests or if you would like to leave a note about your registration. You can also email [email protected] with any teammate requests or questions.
